As a former professional Ballroom and Latin Dancer I learned that the physical connection between the man and the woman was the primary factor which determined the quality of their communication with one another through leading and following. In Latin it is felt through the Hands and Arm connection, in Ballroom, through the Dance Hold and in Tango, through what is called the Embrace.
In Latin Dance, we communicate through our connection a rhythmic pelvic action, in the ballroom, a middle connection at the solar plexus, and in tango at the upper body in the heart area. Interestingly, these 3 connections coincide with what are known as the 3 Treasures in Taoism, Jing (sexual energy), Chi (Life Force), and Shen (Emotional, Intellectual and Spiritual energy). One could easily say that Tango’s energy is one of inner contained emotion with a cerebral presence of possession and surrender. Yet all 3 energies are active, (as they are in all 3 forms of dances) in their unique proportions. In Latin dance, the prominent center of energy is the sexual center, in Ballroom the solar plexus for safety, security, and nurturing, and in Tango, the heart center.
